Nature’s greatest spectacle – a total eclipse of the Sun – visits the continental United States for the first time in 38 years on August 21, 2017. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely covers the Sun and the breathtaking beauty of the Sun’s atmosphere, it’s corona, is displayed in the sky for the only time during our lives. Daytime instantly is plunged into a deep twilight and brighter stars and planets will be seen. This event is called the Great American Eclipse because so many tens of millions of Americans are within a one day drive of this celestial spectacular.
This video shows the Moon’s shadow racing across the state at supersonic speeds. Everyone standing in the shadow during the times shown will experience the Moon completely obscuring the Sun and the sight of the Sun’s corona in the darkened sky. The partial stages of the eclipse will last a bit over two hours and the total stage of the eclipse will last over 2 minutes if you are in the center of the path. You will remember a total eclipse for the rest of your life and won’t regret the drive into the path of totality.
